दूसरी कथा के अनुसार जब श्रीकृष्ण ने राक्षस नरकासुर का वध करके प्रजा को उसके आतंक से मुक्ति दिलाई तो द्वारका की प्रजा ने दीपक जलाकर उनको धन्यवाद दिया।
एक और परंपरा के अनुसार सतयुग में जब समुद्र मंथन हुआ तो धन्वंतरि और देवी लक्ष्मी के प्रकट होने पर दीप जलाकर आनंद व्यक्त किया गया।
