मुघल काळात देवळावर आक्रमण होऊ नये म्हणून या देवळाला मशिदीसारखा आकार दिला आहे.

आख्यायिकेनुसार मिथिला येथील गंडकी नगरीचा राजा चक्रपाणी राज्य करीत होता. तो आणि त्याची राणी उग्रा हे मुल नसल्यामुळे दुःखी होते. त्या दोघांनी सूर्याची उपासना केली आणि आशीर्वादस्वरूप राणीला दिवस गेले. परंतु त्या गर्भाचे तेज आणि प्रभा राणी सहन करू शकली नाही आणि तिने त्या गर्भाला समुद्रात सोडून दिले. त्यातून एका तेजस्वी पुत्राचा जन्म झाला. ब्राम्हणाच्या रुपात समुद्राने त्या मुलाला राजाच्या हवाली केले. समुद्रात जन्म पावल्याने राजाने आपल्या मुलाचे नाव सिंधू ठेवले. सूर्याची उपासना करणारा हा सिंधू जस जसा मोठा होत गेला तसतसा तो अधिकाधिक बलशाली होऊ लागला. सिंधूवर प्रसन्न होऊन सूर्याने त्याला वरदान म्हणून अमृत देऊ केले आणि आशीर्वाद दिला की जोपर्यंत हे अमृत त्याच्या नाभीमध्ये आहे तोपर्यंत त्याचा मृत्यू होणार नाही. अमरत्वाचा वर प्राप्त झाल्यावर सिंधूने इंद्र आदि देवांवर आक्रमण केले. त्याने सर्व देवांचा पराभव केला आणि त्यांना आपल्या तुरुंगात डांबले. मग उरलेल्या देवांनी गणपतीची प्रार्थना केली आणि त्याला असुर राजा सिंधूपासून त्यांना वाचवण्याची विनंती केली. त्यांच्या प्रार्थनांनी प्रसन्न होऊन गणपतीने त्रेतायुगात पार्वतीचा पुत्र म्हणून जन्म घेऊन सिंधू राक्षसाला ठार मारले. यासाठी गणपती मोरावर आरूढ होऊन पृथ्वीवर अवतीर्ण झाला आणि याचठिकाणी सिंधूचे मुंडके पडले.
▶️श्री मोरेश्वर मंदिर आणि परिसर :
या मंदिरात मयूरेश्र्वराबरोबर रिद्धी व सिध्दी यांच्याही मूर्ती आहेत.
असे म्हणतात की ब्रम्हदेवाने दोन वेळा या मयूरेश्र्वराची मूर्ती बनवली आहे.
पहिली मूर्ती बनवल्यावर ती सिंधूसूराने तोडली. म्हणून ब्रम्हदेवाने पुन्हा एक मूर्ती घडवली.
सध्याची मयूरेश्र्वराची मूर्ती खरी नसून त्यामागे खरी मूर्ती असल्याचे मानले जाते. ती मूर्ती लहान वाळू व लोखंडाचे अंश व हिर्यांपासून बनलेली आहे. या मंदिराचे आणखी एक वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे या मंदिराच्या समोर एक नंदीची मूर्ती आहे.
असे सांगितले जाते की शंकराच्या मंदिरासाठी नंदीची मूर्ती एका रथातून नेली जात होती, मात्र येथे आल्यावर त्या रथाचे चाक तुटले. त्यामुळे या नंदीला येथेच ठेवण्यात आले.

सकाळी ५ वाजता प्रक्षाल पूजा (गणपतीचे स्नान), सकाळी ७ वाजता शोडपचार पूजा, दुअपारी १२ वाजता दुसरी शोडपचार पूजा, रात्री ८ वाजता पंचोपचार पूजा आणि रात्री १० वाजता शेजारती केली जाते.
मुख्य गणेश मूर्तीची पूजा दररोज सकाळी ७, दुपारी १२ आणि रात्री ८ वाजता केली जाते. माघ शुक्ल चतुर्थी म्हणजेच गणेश जयंती आणि भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी म्हणजेच गणेश चतुर्थी या दोन दिवशी भक्त मोठ्या प्रमाणावर मयुरेश्वराचे दर्शन घेण्यास गर्दी करतात. या दोन्ही दिवशी चिंचवड येथे संत मोरया गोसावी यांनी स्थापिलेल्या मंगलमुर्ती मंदिरातून भक्तगण पालखी घेऊन येतात. गणेश चतुर्थी ते अनंत चतुर्दशी या दहा दिवसात मयूरेश्वराच्या मंदिरात जत्रा भरते. विजयादशमी आणि सोमवती अमावस्या हे दिवससुद्धा साजरे केले जातात.
