QUESTION: What is phonetics and what is phonology?
ANSWER:
Phonetics is the study of sounds and is concerned with the production, audition and perception of o speech sounds
(called phones). On the other hand, phonology describes the way sounds function within a given language and operates
at the level of sound systems and abstract sound units. You can actually change one word into another by simply
changing one sound. Consider the differences between the words bile and pile. The words are identical except for the
first sound. [b] and [p] can therefore distinguish words, and are called contrasting sounds. They are distinctive sounds in
English, and all distinctive sounds are classified as phonemes.

Minimal Pairs
Minimal pairs are words with different meanings that have the same sounds except for one. These contrasting sounds
can either be consonants or vowel. The words real and rule are also exactly the same except for the vowel sound. The
examples from above, bile and pile, are also minimal pairs. The words din and tin are minimal pairs because they are
exactly the same except for the first sound one contrastive sound are minimal pairs. Another feature of minimal pairs is
overlapping distribution. Sounds that occur in phonetic environments that are identical are said to be in overlapping
distribution.

Free Variation
Some words in English are pronounced differently by different speakers. This is noticeable among American English
speakers and British English speakers, as well as dialectal differences.
Phones and Allophones
Phonemes are not physical sounds. They are abstract mental representations of the phonological units of a language.
Phones are considered to be any single speech sound of which phonemes are made. Phonemes are a family of phones
regarded as a single sound and represented by the same symbol. The different phones that are the realization of a
phoneme are called allophones of that phoneme. The use of allophones is not random, but rule-governed. No one is
taught these rules as they are learned subconsciously when the native language is acquired. To distinguish between a
phoneme and its allophones, we use slashes // to enclose phonemes and brackets [] to enclose allophones or phones.
For example, [i] and [ĩ] are allophones of the phoneme /i/; [ɪ] and [ɪ̃] are allophones of the phoneme /ɪ/.
If two sounds are allophones of the same phoneme, they are said to be in complementary distribution.
These sounds cannot occur in minimal pairs and they cannot change the meaning of otherwise identical
words. If you interchange the sounds, you will only change the pronunciation of the words, not the
meaning. Native speakers of the language regard the two allophones as variations of the same sound.
To hear this, start to say the word cool (your lips should be pursed in anticipation of /u/ sound), but then
say kill instead (with your lips still pursed.) Your pronunciation of kill should sound strange because cool
and kill are pronounced with different allophones of the phoneme /k/.
Nasalized vowels are allophones of the same phoneme in English. Take, for example, the sounds in
bad and ban. The phoneme is /?/, however the allophones are [?] and [?̃]. Yet in French, nasalized
vowels are not allophones of the same phonemes. They are separate phonemes. The words beau [bo]

and bon [b?] are not in complementary distribution because they are minimal pairs and have
contrasting sounds. Changing the sounds changes the meaning of the words. This is just one example
of differences between languages.
Phonological Rules
Assimilation: sounds become more like neighboring sounds, allowing for ease of articulation or
pronunciation; such as vowels are nasalized before nasal consonants
- Harmony: non-adjacent vowels become more similar by sharing a feature or set of features (common
in Finnish)
- Gemination: sound becomes identical to an adjacent sound
- Regressive Assimilation: sound on left is the target, and sound on right is the trigger
Dissimilation: sounds become less like neighboring sounds; these rules are quite rare, but one example
in English is [fɪfθ] becoming [fɪft] (/f/ and /θ/ are both fricatives, but /t/ is a stop)
Epenthesis: insertion of a sound, e.g. Latin "homre" became Spanish "hombre"
- Prothesis: insertion of vowel sound at beginning of word
- Anaptyxis: vowel sound with predictable quality is inserted word-internally
- Paragoge: insertion of vowel sound at end of word
- Excrescence: consonant sound inserted between other consonants (also called stop-intrusion)
Deletion: deletion of a sound; e.g. French word-final consonants are deleted when the next word begins
with a consonant (but are retained when the following word begins with a vowel)
- Aphaeresis: vowel sound deleted at beginning of word
- Syncope: vowel sound is deleted word-internally
- Apocope: vowel sound deleted at end of word
Metathesis: reordering of phonemes; in some dialects of English, the word asked is pronounced [?ks];
children's speech shows many cases of metathesis such as aminal for animal
Lenition: consonant changes to a weaker manner of articulation; voiced stop becomes a fricative,
fricative becomes a glide, etc.
Palatalization: sound becomes palatal when adjacent to a front vowel Compensatory Lengthening:
sound becomes long as a result of sound loss, e.g. Latin "octo" became Italian "otto"
Assimilation in English
Let us have a look at the formation of plurals and the past tense in English. When pluralizing nouns, the
last letter is pronounced as either [s], [z], or [əz]. When forming past tenses of verbs, the -ed ending is
pronounced as either [t], [d], [əd]. If you were to sort words into three columns, you would be able to tell
why certain words are followed by certain sounds:
Plurals

/s/ /z/ /əz/

cats dads churches

tips bibs kisses

laughs dogs judges

Past Tense

/t/ /d/ /əd/

kissed loved patted

washed jogged waded

coughed teased seeded
Hopefully, we can determine which consonants produce which sounds. In the nouns, /s/ is added after
voiceless consonants, and /z/ is added after voiced consonants. /əz/ is added after sibilants. For the
verbs, /t/ is added after voiceless consonants, and /d/ is added after voiced consonants. /əd/ is added
after alveolar stops. The great thing about this is that no one ever taught you this in school. But thanks
to linguistics, you now know why there are different sounds (because of assimiliation rules, the
consonants become more like their neighboring consonants.)
Writing Rules
General phonological rule is A → B / D __ E (said: A becomes B when it occurs between D and E)
Other symbols in rule writing include: C = any obstruent, V = any vowel, ? = nothing, # = word
boundary, ( ) = optional, and { } = either/or. A deletion rule is A → ? / E __ (A is deleted when it occurs
after E) and an insertion rule is ? → A / E __ (A is inserted when it occurs after E).
Alpha notation is used to collapse similar assimilation rules into one. C → [Α voice] / __ [Α voice] (An
obstruent becomes voiced when it occurs before a voiced obstruent AND an obstruent becomes
voiceless when it occurs before a voiceless obstruent.) Similarly, it can be used for dissimilation rules
too. C → [-Α voice] / __ [Α voice] (An obstruent becomes voiced when it occurs before a voiceless
obstruent AND an obstruent becomes voiceless when it occurs before a voiced obstruent.) Gemination
rules are written as C1C2 → C2C2 (for example, pd → dd)
Syllable Structure

Three peaks to a syllable: nucleus (vowel), onset (consonant before nucleus) and coda (consonant
after nucleus.) The onset and coda are both optional, meaning that a syllable could contain a vowel and
nothing else. The nucleus is required in every syllable by definition. The order of the peaks is always
onset - nucleus - coda. All languages permit open syllables (Consonant + Vowel), but not all languages
allow closed syllables (Consonant + Vowel + Consonant). Languages that only allow open syllables are
called CV languages. In addition to not allowing codas, some CV languages also have constraints on
the number of consonants allowed in the onset.
The sonority profile dictates that sonority must rise to the nucleus and fall to the coda in every
language. The sonority scale (from most to least sonorous) is vowels - glides - liquids - nasals -
obstruents. Sonority must rise in the onset, but the sounds cannot be adjacent to or share a place of
articulation (except [s] in English) nor can there be more than two consonants in the onset. This
explains why English allows some consonant combinations, but not others. For example, price [prajs] is
a well-formed syllable and word because the sonority rises in the onset (p, an obstruent, is less
sonorous than r, a liquid); however, rpice [rpajs] is not a syllable in English because the sonority does
not rise in the onset.
The Maximality Condition posits that onsets are as large as possible up to the well-formedness rules
of a language. Onsets are always preferred over codas when syllabifying words.

Finding San Antonio Home Builder
When you have finally decided to build a house it is very critical that you consider
choosing a good San Antonio home builder. It can be very frustrating to start a new
project without first getting a qualified person in that field to go with you every step of
the way. A home is important to human beings. From the start to the end of the project
all details have to be carefully considered to avoid problems and losses. When selecting
a good San Antonio home builder the following factors need to be carefully observed:
1. Their reputation
The reputation of a San Antonio home builder is very crucial for you to know. Ask
around and see if anyone in the neighborhood has worked with them or is familiar with
them. Look for the local directories in your area to find out more about the San Antonio
home builder. He must have a good reputation to start with.
2. Their experience
You need to get a San Antonio home builder who has worked long enough in the
construction industry. Avoid novices who might want to zero-in on your naivety and take
your hard-earned money after doing some shoddy job. You will have to regret. Go for an
experienced professional.
3. He listens
A good San Antonio home builder should be a good listener. You do not want to have
someone who ignores your views. The person must be willing to give you advice on
how to go about building a great home. A good listener is your sure bet.
4. Their license
A true San Antonio home builder is one who is already licensed and insured for the job.
Carefully scrutinize his documents to find out if he is duly registered with the relevant
government agencies. A trusted San Antonio home builder is one with an insurance
cover card from a trustworthy company. Do not over-look this important aspect.
5. Their expertise
A qualified San Antonio home builder must have the necessary expertise in the field.
The person must be well-trained to build. You need to verify that the person went to
college to get the required skills.

6. A Detailed, Organized Person

A reliable San Antonio home builder must be an organized person with an eye for
details. He must have learned the ropes of home building long enough to spot any
anomalies. You do not want to hire someone who falters along and does things rashly.

MAKING MONEY THROUGH YOUR WRITING AND BLOGGING
Prove you can deliver. People believe what they see.

If you say you are a great writer, then give your writing samples right
away after the meat. Let the client actually taste and see that your
writing is good.

It is best to link to your writing samples instead of using attachments.

In short, if you have written two amazing samples and you have them
in your computer, publish one on Medium and another one on
LinkedIn. Google how to do this if you don`t know. It should take you
a few minutes.

Once published, be sending the links to your BEST samples as proof
you can deliver.

5. The answers

This is where lazy freelancers get caught. And this is where a client
sees which freelancer is serious.

In some Upwork jobs, a client asks a few questions. Make sure you
actually answer these questions comprehensively. Don`t skip them
and don`t write some lazy arrogant responses.

You don`t have to write a composition here, but just be
straightforward and clear with your answers.

6. The length

A proposal shouldn`t be an entire newspaper. I usually mirror a
client`s post length. If a client has a long job post, I do a longer
proposal. If the client is job post is short, I do a proposal with just a
few sentences.

You don`t have to copy this. You must use your mind in every
proposal. Be wise. Some clients can have a job post with just two
sentences, but you will need to have a 5 paragraph proposal to aptly
take care of their needs.

So, do this...

Keep the length as short as possible, making sure every word counts.
Most of my proposals just have a few sentences i.e. 3 to 5 short
paragraphs. I also make sure I answer the client`s screening
questions comprehensively.

7. The closing

It is so hard for human beings to say thank you. You can provide
value to a crowd for 90 years but just a few will verbally appreciate.
However, you do one wrong thing and the whole world will pounce
on you.

In short, the world has a shortage of gratitude.

And that is where your power lies.

Finish your proposals with gratitude.

High chances are the client is under-appreciated like most other
human beings.

Beam  is made up of a steel, Iron and woods that can be withstand the load. The beam has dimensions in such a way that  one dimension is abnormally shorter than the other dimension.

Types of Beam -

There are various types of beam.

Cantilever Beam

The cantilever beam is the beam in which the beam is supported by the fixed end on one side , and it is free at one end.
The cantilever beam is the beam that is fixed on one side and free at the another side.

Simply supported Beam

The simply supported beam is the beam in which the beam is supported by the point.

The simply supported beam is the beam that is simply placed on the support.

Fixed Beam

Fixed Beam is the beam in which the both ends of the beam is fixed. Fixed Beam is the beam that is fixed at the both end of the beam.

Overhanging Beam

In case of overhanging beam, the bean is fully supported by the support but the other part of the bean is hanging over on the both side of the beam.

Continuous Beam

Continuous beam is the type of beam which is giving regular load on the whole surface.
Continuous beam is the type of beam where the load is continuously distributed over length and the support.

There are several types of load, which is used in engineering purpose. Some of them are described below -

1) Point load

It is the load which acts on the body at a fixed and specific point. It does not consider or include the overall length of the body.

2) Regular load or uniformly distributed load -

It is the load which is acting on the body along the overall length of the body and it does not act on the only one point of the body.

3) Irregular load or non uniformly distributed load -

It is the load which is acting on the whole length of the body, but in the varying style. At one point, it is very high in magnitude and another point, it is very small in the magnitude.

Shear stress and bending moment  in various types of beams -

When a load  is supplied on the body, then the observer has  to divide the body into two parts. First one is  right hand portion  and the second one will be left hand partion. The right hand portion should be taken as a positive shear force and left hand portion should be taken as the negative shear force, if the direction of the forces try to move the body in clockwise direction.  The right-hand portion should be taken as negative shear force and the left-hand portion should be taken as negative shear force, if the force tries to move the observed body in the anticlockwise direction.
There is a cantilever beam. There is a load of 5 N acting on it.

The beam is bisected into two parts.

The right portion of the beam is trying to move the body in clockwise direction, as well as, the left portion of the beam is trying to move the body in clockwise direction. So, both are taken as positive shear force.

The right portion of the beam is trying to move the body in clockwise direction, in downward direction of the beam, but it is known as hogging. Here the bending moment is negative impact.

The left portion of the beam is trying to move the body in anticlockwise direction, and is known as the sagging. Here the bending moment is positive impact.

                      Shear force in beam -

When a force is applied on the body and if shear  force is tried to find out, then the observer has  to bisect the body into two parts. First one is  right hand portion and first one part will be on  right hand and the second one will be left hand part or portion.

Bending moment in various types of beam -

When a load is applied on the body and if the observer wants to find out bending moment generated in the body, then the observer has  to bisect the body into two parts. First one is  right hand portion and  second one will be left hand part or portion.

The right hand portion and the left hand portion should be taken as positive bending moment, if it tries to move the body in upward direction. In language of engineering, it is called sagging.

The right hand portion and the left hand portion should be taken as negative bending moment, if it tries to move the body in downward direction. In language of engineering, it is called hogging.

If there is a beam and several types of forces are applied on that, then firstly ,   bisect the beam into the two section. The midpoint between the two forces,  should be line at which the beam should be cut.

There is a cantilever beam. There is a load of 5 N acting on it.

The beam is bisected into two parts.

Managers in an organisation have positions of authority.  This authority they draw from the Organisation Structure.  Without there being this structure, managers will be powerless   and  the organisation directionless. All the members in the organisation will grope in the dark not knowing what course to take to reach the goal.  They will work in uncertainty.  Managers will not be able to direct the employees to do the required functions.  Employees will have no respect for their seniors.  They will only decide what  they should  do and they will be able to get away with it.  Morale and productivity will show declining trend.

Organisational Structure therefore assumes importance.  It is the  Organisational  Structure that provides direction and gives support to the Managers.  This Structure is not just a chart showing the positions /  designations in the organisations.  It describes the organizational web of duties, authority, responsibilities and accountability.   It portrays relationships and primarily focuses on the powers / authorities vested in those positions.  The whole activity of the organisation is controlled, guided and governed by this structure.  Hence it is necessary that Managers protect this structure.  It is in their interests as they derive authority from  this and are therefore able to direct others to realise the objectives organisation has set for itself.

When one joins an organisation, he commits to perform specific functions under the direction of Managers / Supervisors.  It is the structure that establishes a working relationship between the Managers and the managed. The real test of good structure is actual relationship.  The strength of relationship between a Manager?s directive and the resulting action is the measure of the effectiveness of the Structure. A Manager who works within the confines of the authority strengthens the structure, one who goes outside the authority structure or oversteps it, demonstrates to his subordinates and colleagues that the existing structure can be disregarded.  If this is the message subordinates get, it demolishes the entire authority structure and eventually weakens the Manager?s position and authority.

INGREDIENTS OF A STRONG STRUCTURE:

MUTUAL RESPECT:

Any authority structure will not achieve the desired objective if there is no climate of mutual respect.  Employees should respect the authority vested in managers to make decisions and Managers  must  respect  the  talents  and  preferences  of  subordinates. They should never give an order which they believe will not be carried out.  If orders are not carried out, it shows lack of respect and  damages the Managers? Authority Structure.

INTEGRITY AND FAIRNESS:

Every action that subverts the integrity and fairness of the Structure will weaken its effectiveness.  For the smooth working of the organisation there must be an AUTHORITY STRUCTURE that functions and promotes equity and fairness.

CONFIDENCE AND TRUST:

Management must show confidence in people who are doing a good job and find realistic roles for those who are not.  This gives strength to the Authority Structure.  Nothing damages the Authority Structure more than the ?Organisation Politics?.  More often a well-run department gets disrupted for political reasons.  Lack of trust between seniors and middle managers, between Managers / Supervisors and the subordinates is more the result of Internal Politics.  Internal politics is destructive to the fabric of Authority Structure.

                                                                                                                 Cont?

Rather than make decisions that should be made, Managers make decisions that contradict the factual position and are discriminatory.  A person is promoted to a position he does not deserve or earn.  The result is souring of relationship with Senior Managers, lack of respect for Managers from employees and diminishing enthusiasm for work.  These are indicators of employees? losing confidence and trust in the Structure.

COMMITMENT:

To give credibility to the Structure, Managers must align with it.  They should not complain about the organization to subordinates even if they personally do not agree with the management decision.  When complaints travel from seniors to juniors it tears apart the Authority Structure and destroys subordinates? trust in Management Structure.

Managers should always be conscious of the fact that to their subordinates they represent the organisation and in a real sense they really are organisation to them.  They must, therefore, see logic behind the decisions senior management takes or has   taken   so   as   to defend it and  present   a   rational   picture   to   subordinates.   Managers need to believe in the fairness and equity of the organisation decision, only then it will percolate down to their subordinates.  Stronger the Structure is, more efficient the organisation will be.

Leavening Agents -   Leavening agents also known as Raising agents, are the agents that increase the surface area of the dough or batter by creating gas bubbles in the dough or batter. They helps in rising of bakery products and gives them a porous texture.

Types of Leavening agents-
1. Chemical -   Baking soda and baking powder are common chemical leavening agents. Baking soda is basically sodium bi carbonate. Baking powder is baking soda and some acids. We use them in Cookies, Cakes and brownies etc.
2. Biological -   Yeast is a biological leavening agent. It is a living microorganism. The scientific name of yeast is Saccharomyces cerevisiae . Yeast acts on sugar in dough and converts it into alcohol and carbon dioxide. It helps in fermentation process in bread making.
3. Mechanical-  Creaming and whisking  are examples . In creaming we mix fat and sugar  and make bakery products. In cookies also we use this method. We prepare meringue ( mixture of egg white and sugar)   by whisking.
4 .   Natural-   In Dhokla ,product rises due to steam . We use fruit salt  , gram flour, oil, sugar, salt and lemon juice and water  in preparation of dhokla. Dhokla is very famous dish in Gujarat. In Choux pastry also  steam acts as a leavening agent.
5.  Combination-   Vanilla buns, Fruit cakes are some examples of combination process where whisking, creaming and chemical raising agents are used to finish the product.
